Residents in Southern California are being urged to conserve energy and avoid using major appliances during a severe heatwave that has pushed temperatures into the triple digits. Power providers are warning of the potential for rolling blackouts if demand exceeds supply.

Heatwave Intensifies Energy Strain

With temperatures soaring in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and Riverside, Southern California is facing an unprecedented energy crisis. On Monday, power providers issued a plea for residents to take steps to reduce their electricity usage during the peak hours of the day.

Southern California Edison (SCE) said it is closely monitoring the electric system and preparing for the potential impacts of increased electrical demand. “We use every available resource to provide reliable service,” SCE stated. “Even so, extreme heat can increase energy use and put extra strain on the electric system, which may increase the likelihood of temporary outages.”

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) also issued similar recommendations, urging residents to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher during the hottest parts of the day and avoid using major appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and vacuum cleaners.

Additional measures include avoiding the use of stoves and ovens, closing curtains and blinds to reduce sunlight, turning off lights and electrical equipment when not in use, and unplugging chargers and appliances that continue to draw power.

Residents are also encouraged to prepare for possible outages by charging mobile devices, reviewing emergency plans, and ensuring that critical equipment has backup power if available. SCE specifically urged conservation from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., including limiting use of major appliances during those hours.
