Former Vice President Kamala Harris launched a Democratic get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaign ahead of the midterms, urging voters to take action and reclaim power. Speaking at an event just 29 days before Election Day, Harris emphasized the importance of feeling empowered and collective action.
Power in the People
Harris reiterated her signature message: “If you feel powerless, you are powerless. If you feel powerful, you are powerful.” She called on Democrats to return to the streets, knock on doors, and make calls to turn out voters.
“We are right now in that phase where we can remind folks that we are all in this together and that the voice of the people is powerful,” Harris said. She argued that the midterms represent a pivotal moment for voters to change the direction of the country.
Criticism of Trump and Iran
Harris criticized President Trump’s administration, calling it “the most callous, corrupt, and incompetent presidential administration we’ve ever experienced.” She also blamed the Iran war for causing “at least a 50% increase in the cost of gas” and highlighted the struggles of Americans dealing with rising living costs.
“We are in the phase where we can do something to change the course of where this stuff has been going,” she said. Harris named a list of battleground states, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Michigan, where Democrats hope to flip control of the House, Senate, and state legislatures.
Founders and Checks on Power
Harris also referenced the Founding Fathers, saying they anticipated the possibility of a president abusing power. “Our founders imagined a moment where there may be a tyrant occupying the White House,” she said.
She argued that the Founders created a system of checks and balances, but warned Democrats cannot rely on the Supreme Court. Instead, she emphasized the importance of Congress and the power of the people to shape the political landscape.
Call to Action
Harris ended her speech by thanking the volunteers working on the GOTV effort and encouraging them to continue the fight. “This work matters. You matter,” she said. “Please take care of yourselves and know that we have so much to do that is good work and yes hard work is good work.”
