Fred Claire, the former general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers who oversaw the 1988 World Series championship team, has died at the age of 91. He passed away on his 91st birthday in Pasadena, California, according to an announcement by the team.

Cancer Battle and Health Struggles

Claire, who had a 30-year career with the Dodgers in public relations and as a general manager, was diagnosed with squamous cell skin cancer on his lip in January 2015. Despite initial treatment, the cancer returned in his jaw and neck, leading to a series of surgeries, including the removal of a nerve on his left face and several lymph nodes. He underwent radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy over an 11-year battle with the disease.

During his time as general manager, Claire maintained a regular jogging routine and was known to be diligent about wearing sunscreen, except on his lips. His health struggles, however, did not deter him from contributing to the success of the Dodgers during a memorable era in the franchise’s history.

Legacy and Team Commendation

Stan Kasten, the team’s president and CEO, praised Claire’s leadership and the victories he brought to the franchise, including the 1988 World Series title. “Fred brought many victories and Dodger legends to our franchise, as well as the 1988 World Series title,” Kasten said in a statement. “We are forever grateful for his leadership during such a memorable era.”

Claire is survived by his wife, Sheryl, and children Jeff, Jennifer, and Kim. His passing marks the end of an era for the Dodgers, with his contributions to the team’s success remembered and celebrated by fans and colleagues alike.
