Two U.S. soldiers in Washington State demonstrated extraordinary bravery when they intervened to save two children after their mother stabbed them during a highway crash, according to local news reports. The incident occurred on Interstate 5 near DuPont, where a 35-year-old woman was driving erratically, leading to a rollover crash.
Crash and Alleged Attack
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) reported that the woman’s Volkswagen Tiguan hit a barrier, rolled across the freeway, and collided with a semi-truck. The vehicle then struck another barrier and rolled again. Passersby witnessed the woman allegedly stabbing her own two children, aged 9 and 15, after the crash.
Soldiers Step In
Two men in military uniforms, driving on the highway from nearby Joint Base Lewis-McChord, stopped to assist. They raced toward the scene, wrestled the woman for the knife, and forced her to the ground. The soldiers held her until WSP arrived to take her into custody.
Witness Accounts
Witness Nathan Wilkinson described the incident, stating, “There’s people standing around, then all of a sudden there was a flash, and then the two soldiers jumped on a person. I heard a scream at that time.” He added that the soldiers did not flee or pass by, but instead stopped to help.
Medical and Legal Outcomes
The younger child suffered broken bones and stab wounds. The woman was taken to the hospital and later booked into Pierce County Jail. She is expected to face charges including two counts of assault, vehicular assault, and two counts of reckless endangerment.
Unidentified Heroes
The names of the soldiers who intervened remain unknown at this time. The incident has once again highlighted the critical role of military personnel in emergency situations and the importance of community support during crises.
