India has sparked widespread protests after removing over 130 million names from its voter rolls, a move that has deeply angered the country’s Muslim community. The purge, which has drawn sharp criticism, is seen by many as a deliberate effort to suppress Muslim political participation. Muslims make up nearly 15% of India’s population of 1.48 billion people, and the removal of their names from the rolls has ignited nationwide demonstrations.

BJP Claims Voter Roll Update Is Necessary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintains that the voter roll purge was necessary to ensure accuracy and to remove ‘infiltrators’ from the electoral system. To be re-registered, individuals must provide documented proof of citizenship, a requirement that critics argue is challenging for many in a country with limited record-keeping infrastructure.

Protests Intensify Amid Calls for Accountability

Protests have erupted across the country, with the ‘Cockroach’ youth movement leading demonstrations. The movement, which previously forced the resignation of the education minister in July, is now demanding the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of manipulating the rolls to benefit Modi and the BJP. Demonstrations have taken place in multiple cities, with thousands gathering in frustration.

Trump Praises India’s Voter Roll Efforts

President Donald Trump praised India’s voter roll efforts in August, using it as a case study for the U.S. Senate to pass the ‘Save America Act’ to improve election security. Trump highlighted India’s strict voter ID requirements, noting that every voter must have a valid photo ID during elections.

Opposition Demands Legal Action Against Kumar

PARTIES opposing the BJP have called for Kumar to be criminally prosecuted for treason, accusing him of orchestrating the voter roll purge to secure electoral advantages for the ruling party. Kumar has not commented on the recent purge, but he defended the election commission last year, stating, ‘For the Election Commission, there is neither an opposition nor a ruling side; everyone is equal.’

Not the First Time Voter Rolls Have Been in the Spotlight

This is not the first time India’s voter roll revisions have drawn scrutiny. In December, the country conducted one of its largest voter roll revisions in decades, with opposition leaders accusing the process of disenfranchising poor and minority voters, particularly Muslims.
