The $110 billion Paramount-Warner Bros. merger officially closed on Tuesday, forming the new entertainment giant Skydance, led by David Ellison. The merger, which had been the subject of months of speculation and controversy, marks a significant shift in the media landscape. Now operating under the name Skydance, the company has consolidated control over a vast array of assets, including film studios, streaming platforms, and cable networks.

Expanded Media Empire

Skydance now controls major studios such as New Line Cinema and Miramax, as well as DC Studios and Warner Bros’ Clockwork film label. The company also oversees streaming services like Paramount+, HBO Max, Pluto TV, and Discovery+. Its reach extends to numerous cable channels, including CNN, Comedy Central, MTV, and HBO, among others.

Franchises and Future Vision

The new company owns iconic franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Transformers, as well as beloved properties such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Star Trek. In a recent social media post, Ellison outlined his vision for Skydance, emphasizing growth, storytelling, and global reach.

Political and Industry Implications

The merger has been viewed as a win for conservatives, with Ellison’s father, Larry Ellison, being a prominent Republican donor. While Ellison is not strictly partisan, his alignment with conservative interests has drawn attention. The deal also cleared its final legal hurdle after a federal judge approved a settlement with 12 state attorneys general, which includes protections for local studio lots and an independent editorial board for CBS News and CNN.

Leadership Changes and Reactions

Departing Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav expressed gratitude to employees in a video posted on the company’s internal portal, acknowledging the significant contributions of the team. The merger is seen as a major milestone in the entertainment industry, reshaping the landscape for years to come.
