U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Western civilization faces a critical inflection point during a diplomatic address in Athens, Greece, where he called for decisive action to shape the future of the West.

Delivered at the historic Pnyx site, with the Acropolis in the background, Rubio’s speech emphasized the need for the West to adapt to a rapidly changing global landscape driven by great-power competition, technological advancements, and emerging security threats.

“Decisions made now will help determine the West’s future,” Rubio said, stressing that the moment is an inflection point for both individual nations and Western civilization as a whole. He urged European allies to “awaken from their long slumber” and take greater responsibility for their own security.

Rubio outlined the Trump administration’s strategic approach, which includes an “unapologetic pursuit of national power.” This strategy focuses on strengthening domestic industry, securing critical supply chains, rebuilding defense capabilities, and maintaining leadership in key technologies.

He also emphasized that America’s pursuit of its national interests does not undermine the importance of Western alliances and institutions. Instead, stronger nations and capable allies are essential to address the security and economic challenges facing the West.

Rubio’s address capped his diplomatic visit to Greece, the second stop on a European tour that began in Iceland and will continue in Portugal. Before the speech, he met with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and participated in the sixth U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue.

Rubio praised Greece as a strong and model NATO ally, highlighting its role in addressing regional security challenges, including border security and defense spending.
