Pastor Candidate Uncertain on Transgender Youth Guidance
Kansas Senate candidate Adam Hamilton faces scrutiny over past comments on transgender children and parental guidance.

Kansas Democrat Senate candidate Adam Hamilton, known for his Christian faith, has faced recent scrutiny over his past comments on how to handle transgender youth. During a 2019 discussion on sexual ethics at the Church of the Resurrection, Hamilton expressed confusion about guiding parents of children who identify as transgender.
Uncertainty on Parental Guidance
Hamilton, a pastor in the United Methodist Church, admitted during the talk that he was unsure whether to encourage parents to embrace their child’s gender identity. His comments, shared by The Daily Wire, revealed his internal struggle with the issue.
“Do we give guidance? Do we not give guidance? What do we do here?” Hamilton asked, highlighting his uncertainty about the role of parents in such situations. He further questioned whether children should be left to figure out their identity or if there should be a parental role in the process.
Political Context and Campaign Stance
Hamilton is running against Republican Senator Roger Marshall, who has introduced several bills targeting transgender rights, including a proposal to ban gender surgeries on minors and define male and female in federal law. Despite his campaign’s claims of opposing gender surgeries on children and boys in girls’ sports, Hamilton has remained largely silent on the topic recently.
His campaign spokesperson, Tyson Brody, emphasized the need for compassion and empathy, stating, “Adam thinks Washington spends far more energy on this issue than on the things Kansans actually lose sleep over, like fixing health care or lowering costs.”
Shifting Positions and Recent Legislation
Hamilton’s position on transgender athletes appears to have shifted. In November 2024, he expressed uncertainty about resolving the intersection of transgenderism and athletics. He stated, “I don’t fully understand the experience of gender dysphoria, it is not my experience. And I’m not sure what I think about how we resolve the issues surrounding athletics and bathrooms.”
In February 2025, Kansas Republicans overrode a veto from Democratic Governor Laura Kelly to pass a ban on transgender procedures for children, indicating the state’s growing conservative stance on the issue.
Close Senate Race and Political Outlook
The race between Hamilton and Marshall is closely contested, with polls showing a tight race in a state that hasn’t sent a Democrat to the Senate since the 1930s. Republicans have shifted resources to support Marshall’s re-election bid, and Senator Tim Scott, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, expressed confidence in Marshall’s victory, though acknowledging the race is competitive.
