A primary school in Scotland has sparked controversy by renaming traditional Christmas cards as ‘winter cards’ to promote inclusivity and respect for classroom diversity. The change, implemented at Kaimhill Primary School in Aberdeen, has drawn criticism from parents and online users who argue it undermines traditional customs.
Shift in Terminology for Inclusivity
The school’s deputy head sent an email to parents explaining the change, stating that the term ‘winter cards’ is used to ensure the language used in school communications is welcoming and inclusive of all members of the school community. The email emphasized that families are free to refer to the cards as Christmas cards if they prefer.
The decision was reportedly prompted by an abusive and threatening phone call received by the deputy head after an email about the terminology change was shared on social media. The email, which was circulated online, led to an online backlash, with some parents accusing the school of trying to ‘cancel Christmas.’
Parents Express Concern Over Cultural Shift
Several parents voiced their frustration with the change, with one stating, ‘This woke nonsense needs to stop,’ another saying, ‘Who is getting paid to destroy our customs and traditions?’ and a third adding, ‘This is just utter madness. Why are they cancelling Christmas for kids?’ Despite the backlash, the school has confirmed it plans to hold festive events, including a party, fair, and carol singing, to celebrate the season.
Broader Context of Cultural Challenges
This is not the first instance of a challenge to Christmas as a traditional Christian celebration. In 2023, the city of Bradford in England raised a ‘multi-faith festive tree’ during the Christmas season, which was seen as an attempt to move away from Christian traditions. While a traditional Christmas tree was also displayed alongside the ‘multi-faith’ tree, the move was viewed as an assault on Christian cultural practices.
The shift in terminology and festive traditions reflects a broader trend of redefining public celebrations to accommodate diverse beliefs, even as it sparks debate over the preservation of cultural heritage.
