In a heated exchange during a recent debate in Maine, Democrat Senate candidate Troy Jackson accused Senator Susan Collins of profiting from the war in Iran, prompting the five-term Republican incumbent to demand an apology on camera.

War Profits Allegation Sparks Outrage

During the WMTW debate, Jackson raised the issue of home heating oil prices, linking the conflict in Iran to rising energy costs in Maine. He claimed that Collins, as Appropriations chair, had the power to stop funding for the war but instead allowed it to continue, with both Collins and her husband benefiting financially.

Collins immediately rejected the accusation, calling it ‘absolutely outrageous’ and demanding an apology. ‘You owe me an apology,’ she said, emphasizing that the claim was not only false but also disrespectful to her and her husband.

Collins Defends Her Record on Iran

Collins highlighted her efforts to end the conflict, noting that she had voted nine times to bring the war in Iran to a close. She explained that under the War Powers Act, the president has broad discretion for the first 60 days, but after that, congressional approval is required. ‘That is why I have voted nine times to end this war,’ she said.

Jackson tied the conflict directly to Maine’s cost of living, warning that residents paying $6.50 a gallon for heating oil would face severe consequences this winter. ‘They will freeze to death this winter because they can’t afford to heat their home,’ he said.

Iran Votes and Rising Fuel Prices

Collins’ voting record on Iran is well-documented. She was among four Republicans who crossed party lines to support a war-powers resolution restraining President Trump, a move that occurred after a similar measure failed earlier in the year. Maine heating fuel prices had climbed over 30 percent since the war began, adding to the state’s economic strain.

The debate underscored the growing tension between the two candidates, with Collins standing firm in her defense of her record, while Jackson continued to press his allegations of profiteering from the war.
