NY Mayor’s $30M Antisemitism Plan Funds Muslim Brotherhood Ties
NY Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s $30M plan to combat antisemitism faces scrutiny over funding groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s $30 million plan to address antisemitism has drawn criticism for allegedly funneling taxpayer money to groups with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The initiative, designed to support Jewish New Yorkers who face 53% of the city’s hate crimes, includes funding for the Arab American Association of New York, which has given over $223,000 to the New York City chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Groups Linked to Muslim Brotherhood
CAIR has significant ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have labeled CAIR a terrorist organization. The Arab American Association has also been associated with Linda Sarsour, a former Women’s March co-chair and City University of New York alum, who is known for her controversial ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Security Shortfalls and Definition Gaps
Despite the plan’s focus on security, it fails to define antisemitism and does not address the significant private security costs faced by Jewish communities. In 2025, Jewish communal organizations spent over $1 billion on security across the U.S., according to the Jewish Federations of North America. The lack of a clear definition has prompted backlash from over 25 Jewish organizations, which criticized the plan for largely sidestepping the issue of anti-Israel activism.
Mayor’s Wife and Controversial Ties
Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, has been linked to posts celebrating the October 7 massacres and promoting the People’s Forum, a Chinese Communist Party-linked group. The People’s Forum, along with the Democratic Socialists of America, organized marches in support of Hamas. The mayor has previously distanced himself from his wife’s social media activity.
Political Struggles and Lack of Response
The controversy comes amid broader tensions within the Democratic Party over leftist extremism. Leftists have criticized Mamdani for being insufficiently anti-Israel. Despite the scrutiny, Mamdani has not responded to questions about the plan’s funding of Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups.
