Former President Barack Obama has urged Democrats not to grow complacent as the midterms approach, warning that races currently showing Democratic leads could still be lost. Speaking at a fundraising event for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in Northern Virginia, Obama emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on key Senate races.
Complacency a Risk in Tight Races
Obama highlighted several close contests, including the race in Kansas between Republican Senator Roger Marshall and far-left Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, and the Georgia contest between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Mike Collins. While polls show Democrats leading in some races, Obama cautioned that this does not guarantee victory.
“All these races that are showing we’ve got a two- or three-point lead or it’s a toss-up, we could end up losing all of them by two points,” Obama said. “It’s within the margin of error.” He also pointed out the potential for shifts in polling and the unpredictability of the political landscape.
Senate Control and Judicial Impact
Obama stressed the importance of Democrats securing control of the Senate, arguing that it would help prevent further judicial overreach by President Donald Trump. “If you get two more years of Trump acting with impunity, along with additional judicial appointments, so that at some point the scales may tip in the direction where he’s got carte blanche, you now have a very serious danger to democracy in addition to just bad policy,” he said.
Obama acknowledged that the judiciary is currently “bent but not broken” and that it has held the line in important areas, though he noted that the Supreme Court has not always done so.
Unity Amidst Divisions
Despite differences within the party, Obama expressed confidence in the unity of Democrats. “What I can say is that I expect Democrats to stand for treating everybody with dignity and respect,” he said. He also mentioned the ongoing internal debates between far-left socialists and establishment Democrats, but emphasized the need for a unified front.
The event raised approximately $3.6 million for the DSCC, underscoring the importance of fundraising in the lead-up to the midterms.
