Britain’s military chief has expressed confidence in the security of UK bases following a two-week period of arrests linked to U.S.-operated facilities. Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the professional head of all British armed forces, addressed troops during an exercise, emphasizing that the bases remain safe despite the recent security concerns.

U.S. Bases and Intelligence Collaboration

Knighton reiterated that the decision to relocate U.S. Air Force bombers from RAF Fairford was an operational move to reduce risk. He also highlighted the close intelligence and operational ties with the U.S., stating that these relationships are a key factor in ensuring the safety of British military bases.

Recent Security Incidents

The scrutiny of American bases in the UK began on September 26, when heightened security measures were observed at RAF Fairford. Five men, including British passport holders, were arrested for suspicious behavior near the base. Two other individuals, one being an Iranian citizen, were later arrested at London addresses. All have since been released on bail.

Latvian Arrest at RAF Molesworth

Hours after these arrests, two Latvian men were detained at RAF Molesworth, a joint U.S.-UK-NATO intelligence facility near Cambridge. They allegedly breached the perimeter fence and may have been inside the base for up to four hours. Latvia, a NATO member with a significant Russian-speaking population, borders Russia, adding to the strategic importance of the base.

NATO Intelligence Fusion Center

RAF Molesworth hosts several intelligence centers, including the NATO Intelligence Fusion Center (NIFC), which integrates intelligence networks across all alliance members. The NIFC’s mission includes producing full-spectrum, multi-domain operational and strategic intelligence through a range of intelligence disciplines and expertise.

U.S. Command Response

A U.S. European Command spokesman confirmed awareness of the reports but declined to comment on intelligence matters or specific force protection measures. The statement emphasized the ongoing assessment of the threat environment and the commitment to protecting personnel and facilities.
