Columbia University faced backlash on social media after a menu item appeared to reference the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, with the dish labeled ‘October 7th Blush Sauce.’ The error went viral after Israeli journalist Simone Saidmehr shared a screenshot of the menu on X, prompting widespread speculation that the item was a deliberate reference to the tragic attack, which killed around 1,200 people.
University Clarifies It Was an Accident
In response, Columbia University issued a statement clarifying the mistake was unintentional. Vicki Dunn, assistant vice president of Columbia Dining, told Fox News that the date was accidentally left in when copying meal information into the menu template. She emphasized that the dish was not meant to reference the October 7 attacks and that the menu signs were removed immediately after the error was identified.
Columbia also posted a similar statement on X, reiterating that the date was an accident and not a reference to the events of October 7. The university apologized for the confusion and concern caused by the error.
Controversy and Past Tensions
The incident has reignited discussions about the university’s role in campus activism, particularly regarding anti-Israel sentiments. Columbia has previously been the site of anti-Israel protests, including the Columbia Intifada, which, though not officially affiliated with the university, has drawn attention due to its proximity to campus.
Additionally, the university has faced legal challenges in the past, including multiple federal civil rights investigations and a $221 million settlement with the Trump administration over claims of discriminatory practices against Jewish students and faculty. These past tensions have made the current controversy more sensitive for some observers.
Despite the apology, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about how universities handle sensitive topics and the potential for misinterpretation in public spaces.
