Private military contractors linked to Blackwater founder Erik Prince were ambushed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, resulting in at least 20 casualties, according to Reuters. The incident occurred mid-September, during Vectus Global’s security contract with the Congolese government. The attack left several team members dead or wounded, including Tim Kennedy, a U.S. Green Beret, former UFC contestant, and podcast host. Kennedy is recovering from three gunshot wounds at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Victims Include Foreign and Local Personnel
A former New Zealand Special Forces member and at least seven Congolese individuals were among the fatalities, according to Reuters. The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, where armed groups and conflict persist despite government efforts to stabilize the area.
Expanded Operations in Africa
Vectus Global, Prince’s security firm, was initially contracted by President Félix Tshisekedi’s government in October 2024. The company has since expanded its operations in the country, securing a multi-million dollar logistics contract with the Congolese government, as reported by Africa Intelligence. This marks part of a broader trend of private military firms increasing their presence across Africa.
Global Security Contracts
The firm has been active in security contracts in several nations, including Haiti, where it reportedly used armed drones to target gangs. In March 2025, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa Azin announced a “strategic alliance” with Prince, aiming to enhance the country’s capabilities in combating narcoterrorism and protecting its waters from illegal fishing.
Political and Military Ties
Prince, a former Navy SEAL, is a close ally of former President Donald Trump and a board member of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). He recently spoke at CPAC 2026, warning against a ground invasion of Iran, underscoring his continued influence in U.S. military and political circles.
