On Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” comedian and political commentator Bill Maher voiced his concerns about the rapid development of artificial intelligence, while acknowledging that China is not slowing down its efforts to expand its data center infrastructure.

Maher expressed his frustrations with AI, calling it an “asskisser” and admitting he has fears about the AI revolution. He said, “I don’t want it talking to me — I tried to program it, I said you have to sound like a robot, because you are a f*cking robot. Don’t talk to me like a human, because you’re not.” Despite his reservations, Maher agreed with co-host Sara Eisen that the United States must not fall behind in the race for AI advancement.

Eisen emphasized the historical pattern of resistance to major technological changes, such as the internet, the automobile, and nuclear weapons. She stated, “We do not want to be on the side of progress, and we do not want to let China get ahead of us on this dangerous technology. We want to own it, and we want our best people doing it.” She warned that the growing unpopularity of data centers could hinder U.S. progress, urging the nation to accelerate its own data center development.

Maher echoed Eisen’s sentiment, agreeing that the U.S. must not let China outpace it in the AI race. He acknowledged that while he has fears about AI, he also supports the pursuit of technological progress. “Yeah,” he said in response to Eisen’s remarks, showing alignment with her argument that the U.S. must remain competitive in the global AI landscape.

The discussion highlights the growing tension between the U.S. and China in the race for dominance in AI technology. As both nations continue to invest heavily in data centers and AI research, the competition is expected to intensify, with significant implications for global economic and geopolitical power dynamics.
