Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered a sharp rebuke to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in a recent letter, calling out her lack of financial market knowledge and dismissing her claims about the One Big Beautiful Bill. The letter, dated October 9, was a response to a letter Warren had sent two days earlier, in which she criticized the cost of the Iran war and claimed the One Big Beautiful Bill would add nearly $5 trillion to the deficit.

Bessent Calls Out Warren’s Economic Claims

Bessent began his response by stating, “I have received your October 7 letter, which adds to the mounting body of evidence of your complete paucity of knowledge about financial markets. Rather than take my suggestion of studying introductory economics, you have continued your letter-writing crusade and paid participation in tabloid fodder about the Treasury Department.”

Warren argued that the One Big Beautiful Bill would solely benefit “ultra-wealthy and large corporations” while cutting health care and food assistance for families. She also cited the Pentagon’s estimate that the Iran war had cost taxpayers $43.6 billion to date.

Bessent countered by calling Warren’s concerns insincere, noting that while the federal funds rate climbed to its highest level in 22 years and inflation hit a 40-year high, she was a “cheerleader for the Biden Administration’s reckless spending.” He also pointed out that she had voted for a $5 trillion tax hike on everyday Americans, contrasting that with the “Working Families Tax Cuts” that had delivered benefits to millions.

In the letter, Bessent also provided details on the 2025 tax season, stating that the average tax refund had increased by 11% to $3,400, with millions benefiting from provisions such as “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime.” He concluded with an offer to provide Warren with a “Foreign Exchange for Dummies” tutorial, adding a jab about her history as a Harvard professor while he taught at Yale: “If you receive a passing grade to the Yale metric, not the Harvard curve, I would be happy to also include a Fixed Income for Dummies.”

Handwritten Holiday Note Sparks Controversy

Bessent finished the letter with a handwritten note, wishing Warren a “Happy Indigenous People’s Day in advance to you and your family.” This note stirred controversy, as Warren had previously claimed Native American heritage, which was later disproven by a DNA test showing she was only 1/64 to 1/1024 Native American. The revelation led to her apologizing to several tribes, who criticized her for taking the test and using DNA as a measure of ancestry.
