A Polish man has been arrested on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Defence Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed the arrest on social media, stating that the suspect, a man in his 60s, was detained in Lower Silesia after being traced through his online activity.

Online Threats and Radical Connections

According to the Polish Press Agency, the suspect was identified through a confidential informant who reported the plot to security services. Kierwiński described the suspect as being involved in “very radical groups” and actively “establishing very radical contacts with various people online.” The Interior Minister emphasized that the individual was “very active in various fringe groups, expressing extreme views… using very hateful language, calling for violence and hatred in public life.”

Government Response and Investigation

Spokesman Jacek Dobrzyński stated that the Polish security services are treating the matter as “deadly serious,” highlighting the threats against “the most important figures in the state.” However, the government has not yet provided a definitive motive for the alleged plot or whether it was driven by an ideology.

Informant Claims and School Stabbings

Broadcaster TVN24 reported that an informant claimed the suspect had contacted a known radical group on social media, seeking volunteers to carry out an attack using firearms. The informant also stated that he had met with a man who discussed weapons, hatred of the government, and the planned mass murder.

Rzeczpospolita, a Warsaw daily, reported that sources close to the investigation confirmed the alleged plot is not connected to the recent spate of school stabbings across Poland.

Opposition Criticism and Security Concerns

The disclosure of the alleged assassination attempt has drawn some criticism from the opposition, with claims that it is being used as a distraction from government scandals, including accusations of impropriety against Tusk’s ally, Michał Kołodziejczak.

General Mirosław Gawor, former head of the Bureau of Government Protection (BOR), suggested there may be “unnecessary confusion” around the government’s response and hinted at possible hidden motives for the disclosure. He warned that publicizing such threats could make it harder for security services to protect individuals effectively.

The government has defended its decision to reveal the plot, stating it was necessary to “prevent the spread of false information and speculation.”
