NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes survived a brutal stabbing attack by two illegal immigrants, speaking out for the first time about the incident. The attack occurred on October 2 when Mercedes was off duty and cleaning his car’s trunk. Dominican illegal immigrants D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, allegedly attempted to steal his gold chain before stabbing him.

Surviving the Attack

Mercedes, a ten-year NYPD veteran, sustained ten stab wounds as he fought to survive. Despite the severity of his injuries, he managed to chase the attackers for several blocks. He identified himself as a police officer in both English and Spanish, but the suspects allegedly ignored his warnings.

At a news conference in New York City, Mercedes described his critical moments, recalling his training and the need to stay alive. “I realized I was bleeding a lot, I had lost a lot of blood… I just wanted to stop moving so that I don’t lose more blood,” he said. He emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to 911 to ensure help arrived quickly.

Gratitude and Recovery

Mercedes thanked the first responders who saved his life and the investigators working on the case. He also acknowledged a bystander who called 911 on his behalf. “When I thought I was going to die, he came to me and called 911,” he said.

Despite undergoing surgery, Mercedes expressed hope for a full recovery. “I’m happy to be standing. Emotionally I feel happy to be alive. I want to get back to work whenever I fully recover,” he said.

Suspects and Immigration Context

The suspects were found hiding in the basement of a home in Lynn, Massachusetts, five days after the attack. Both had crossed the border illegally and were released under the Biden administration. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had previously lodged a detainer for Mejia, but New York’s sanctuary policies allowed his release. Mejia was ordered deported last year.

Caraballo was arrested in July on a menacing charge after allegedly threatening to stab someone in the Bronx. He was also arrested last year on a firearm possession charge after allegedly having a loaded gun in his car.
