Former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently leading California Governor Gavin Newsom in a hypothetical 2028 Democratic presidential primary, according to a recent survey. The poll, conducted by Focaldata and the Financial Times, surveyed 2,553 U.S. adults between October 2nd and October 5th, revealing that 30% of respondents who are considering the Democratic nomination favor Harris, while 15% prefer Newsom.
Survey Details and Candidate Positions
The survey also included generic ballot metrics to assess party preferences for congressional control, rather than individual head-to-head matchups. In addition to Harris and Newsom, other notable candidates include former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and far-left Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who both received 9% support each. Senator Jon Ossoff followed closely with 8%.
Harris has not yet made a final decision on running for president, expressing that she remains “undecided” on a potential bid. Newsom, however, has made it clear that he would not challenge Harris if she decides to run, stating, “Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her. I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time.”
Political Climate and Midterm Context
With three weeks remaining before the midterm elections, the political landscape is intensifying as speculation grows over who will lead the Democratic Party following President Donald Trump’s second term. The current environment is marked by intense polarization, with Democrats seeking a unifying figure to carry their message forward in the upcoming elections.
The poll highlights the internal dynamics within the party, as candidates vie for the nomination in a highly competitive race. As the midterms approach, the focus remains on the Democratic primary, with Harris and Newsom positioned as the leading contenders for the 2028 presidential election.
