Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer following successful surgery at Policlinico Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the Vatican announced. The Holy Father underwent a radical thoracic procedure, which involved the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung using a video-assisted technique, according to the Holy See Press Office.

Medical Details Confirmed

Doctors, including Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma after examining the removed lung tissue. The cancer was suspected prior to the surgery based on earlier tests. Adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of lung cancer and is typically found in the lining of organs that produce and secrete bodily fluids. It is known to grow more slowly than other lung cancer types and is often detected before it has spread.

Survival Rates and Treatment

The survival rate for lung adenocarcinoma depends on the cancer’s stage. If the cancer is limited to the lung, the five-year survival rate is 63 percent. If it has spread to nearby tissues, the rate drops to about 35 percent, and if it has reached distant areas of the body, the five-year survival rate is 7 percent. However, the Vatican has not disclosed the current stage of the pope’s cancer or whether further treatment is being considered.

Successful Surgery and Recovery

The surgery, which lasted approximately three hours with the actual operation taking about ninety minutes, was described as successful by the medical team. The pope awoke normally after the procedure and was briefly observed before returning to his room. The doctors noted that there were no complications during or after the operation.

Public Response and Next Steps

The Vatican has not issued further details about the pope’s condition or any potential treatment plans. As the Holy Father continues his duties, the global Catholic community is closely monitoring the situation. Health officials have emphasized that the pope is in stable condition and is receiving the necessary medical care.
