Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has begun fundraising for the midterm elections by referencing a federal raid on her Washington, D.C., home, according to reports. The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided her residence on Monday, sparking speculation about an immigration-related federal investigation.

Omar’s office released a fundraising email that highlighted the incident, urging supporters to donate to her campaign. The email, obtained by The Hill’s partner network, NewsNation, stated: “Donald Trump and DHS have opened a baseless, partisan investigation into Ilhan Omar, and she needs us by her side as they escalate their attacks.” It concluded with a call for donations to help Omar “beat Trump and keep fighting for our progressive values in Congress.”

The raid has drawn attention from several members of the Trump administration, who have suggested the probe into Omar’s immigration history has been ongoing. Border Czar Tom Homan noted that the investigation was “ongoing for a while” and mentioned that a warrant was executed on Monday. He declined to provide further details, redirecting questions to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Omar has maintained that the investigation is politically motivated, asserting that Trump is targeting her due to her left-wing political stances rather than any criminal evidence. Former ICE Acting Director Jonathan Fahey told the New York Post that securing a judicial warrant for the raid was not an easy task, implying federal investigators had “probable cause” to believe she committed immigration crimes.

The fundraising effort has sparked debate over the use of sensitive political issues for campaign purposes. Critics argue that leveraging a federal investigation for fundraising could be seen as exploiting a legal process for political gain. However, Omar’s office has defended the move as a necessary step to mobilize support amid ongoing scrutiny.

As the midterm elections approach, the situation highlights the intersection of politics and law, with lawmakers facing intense scrutiny over their personal and professional conduct. The case also underscores the broader tensions surrounding immigration policy and its impact on public perception and political strategy.
