On Tuesday’s episode of MS NOW’s “Morning Joe,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) condemned the recent federal agents’ search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) home in the Washington, D.C., area, calling it a “scandalous abuse of prosecutorial and executive power.”

Concerns Over Use of Executive Power

During the show, co-host Jonathan Lemire raised questions about the federal agents’ actions, noting that the search had not provided a public explanation for its initiation, aside from potential fraud probes. Lemire asked, “Has the Congress been informed as to what’s going on here? Congresswoman Omar says she’s going to keep doing her job. What’s the latest you’ve heard and what concerns do you have about this use of executive power, particularly so close to an election?”

Violation of Justice Rules

Raskin responded by stating that the search “violates the Department of Justice’s own rules,” which prohibit overt investigative or prosecutorial activity within 60 days of an election. He noted that the search occurred just 21 days before a major congressional election, raising questions about its necessity. Raskin emphasized that the search was targeting evidence of fraud potentially committed by Omar’s father in the 1990s and questioned why such an action was taken so close to an election.

Political Persecution Allegations

Raskin further suggested that the search may be part of a broader pattern of political persecution, citing other congressional colleagues such as Adam Schiff, Jason Crow, Maggie Goodland, and Mark Kelly. He noted that investigations against these individuals had largely fallen apart but argued that the purpose of such actions is to cast doubt on the president’s political opponents. Raskin described the use of executive power in this context as “absolutely outrageous and scandalous.”

Broader Implications

The incident has sparked significant debate over the boundaries of executive power and the role of federal agencies in political investigations. Raskin’s comments reflect growing concerns among Democrats about the potential misuse of law enforcement resources to target political figures, especially during critical election periods.
