CBS’s lead play-by-play man, Jim Nantz, has spoken publicly for the first time about the unexpected departure of longtime broadcasting partner Tony Romo. Romo was suspended and eventually let go by CBS following his July arrest for operating a vehicle while under the influence.

Nantz Praises Romo’s Talent and Personality

On the latest edition of the Traina Thoughts podcast, Nantz expressed admiration for Romo’s abilities and appeal. “I don’t know if it’s calling games or being in studio, but he’s got a lot of talent,” Nantz said. “He’s got a lot of people who like him, and he’s a star. He’s got a personality that’s different, and that’s a good thing. He’s a bigger-than-life personality.” Nantz emphasized that he had no role in Romo’s ouster and refrained from speculating about Romo’s current state of mind.

Romo’s Career and Contract Details

Romo and Nantz had worked together at CBS for nine years, forming a strong on-air duo. CBS replaced Romo temporarily with future NFL Hall of Famer JJ Watt before making the decision permanent. Romo had $72 million remaining on his contract with CBS. While the network hasn’t released exact figures, it is believed that CBS paid most of the remaining amount before announcing their mutual parting of ways in October.

Optimism for Romo’s Future

Nantz expressed confidence in Romo’s ability to bounce back from the incident. “I know the support system he has at home, and I look forward to Tony coming through this — and he will,” Nantz said. Despite not defending Romo’s decision to drive under the influence, Nantz remains hopeful about the former star’s future in broadcasting.
