Live World War II-era grenades were discovered during an estate sale in Texas, prompting a swift police response and a reminder to the public about the dangers of handling old military ordnance.

Unexpected Discovery Sparks Police Action

A resident in Austin, Texas, recently purchased boxes at an estate sale, only to find live grenades inside. The Austin Police Association’s bomb squad was called in to handle the situation, confirming that the grenades were still active and posed a significant risk.

The Austin Police Association shared a photo of the grenades on social media, emphasizing the importance of safety and professional handling. They thanked the patrol officers and bomb squad for their quick response and expertise, highlighting the dangers of dealing with 80-year-old explosives.

Authorities Confirm Grenades Are Live

According to authorities, six live grenades were found at the scene. The bomb squad conducted X-ray examinations and assessed the devices, confirming their active status. They then proceeded with render-safe procedures to eliminate any potential hazards.

“Bomb Squad personnel assessed the devices, including X-ray examination,” said a public information officer from the Austin Police Department. “Based on their interpretation of the X-ray images, the grenades appeared to be live and were treated accordingly.”

Public Safety Reminders and Past Incidents

The incident serves as a reminder to the public to never touch or move suspected military ordnance. Authorities stressed that even if an item appears inert, it can still be dangerous. They urged anyone who discovers such items to call 911 immediately.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Last year, a live grenade was found in a donation bin at a Goodwill store in Palatka, Florida. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad safely removed and detonated the grenade, emphasizing the need for thorough checks before donating items.

“We want to remind the community to thoroughly check all items before donating, ensuring that hazardous items, such as explosives, firearms or ammunition, are not accidentally included,” said the Palatka Police Department after the incident.
