In a heated exchange during a live CNN town hall, Catholic theology professor Jody Hunt confronted Texas Democrat James Talarico over his pro-abortion stance, challenging his theological defense of abortion and his claim that the Bible is silent on the issue.
Abortion Debate Sparks Controversy
Hunt, a vocal critic of Talarico’s position, directly addressed his assertion that the Bible is silent on abortion, countering with the Ten Commandments and the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ ‘As Catholics, we take great insult when it’s described that way,’ Hunt said.
Talarico, a leftist Presbyterian seminarian who supports trans-identifying people’s access to abortion, acknowledged differences in theological perspectives. ‘We may come to different moral and ethical conclusions when it comes to the question of should abortion be legal or not,’ he said, but admitted that he and Hunt come to different conclusions.
Public Health vs. Moral Questions
Talarico also downplayed the moral aspects of abortion, calling it a ‘public health problem’ and suggesting the debate should be framed as a policy issue rather than a philosophical or theological one. ‘We treat it as a philosophical debate or a theological debate, when actually it’s a public policy problem,’ he argued.
Controversial Statements on God and Religion
The town hall also saw direct challenges from other Christian voters, including Sarah Gardner, a small-business owner who questioned the authenticity of Talarico’s faith. Gardner criticized his controversial statements about God being nonbinary and the existence of six genders, calling them ‘concerning things’ that call into question his faith.
Talarico defended his views, stating that he believes God is not confined to human categories. ‘God is a verb. God is not a noun at all,’ he said, adding that he sees Jesus as ‘the way, the truth, and the life,’ a dramatic reversal from his previous statements.
Concerns Among Conservative Voters
The town hall has raised concerns among evangelical and Catholic voters about Talarico’s liberal views, especially in a tight race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. His unconventional views on Christianity, which many conservative critics consider blasphemous, have drawn significant attention and criticism.
