New York City’s Democratic-Socialist Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is facing intense backlash for signing only one bill into law during his first 10 months in office, a sharp contrast to his predecessors. According to The New York Post, Mamdani has signed just one City Council bill since taking office in January — an August measure allowing year-round outdoor sidewalk dining — despite nearly 100 bills passing his desk.

Signing Rate Far Below Predecessors

Mamdani’s bill-signing count is significantly lower than that of his last three predecessors. Former Mayor Eric Adams signed 30 laws during his term, Bill de Blasio signed 47, and Mike Bloomberg signed 28. Every other bill has taken effect through a process known as ‘returned unsigned,’ where legislation automatically becomes law if the mayor leaves it untouched for four weeks without issuing a veto.

Focus on Social Media Content

Backlash has escalated since an insider source told the New York Post that the 35-year-old mayor appears to focus most of his time and energy on creating social media content. The Post reported that Mamdani continues to personally appear in many social media clips, including multiple sketches on recent days. Many of the clips have made national headlines and gathered millions of views, as valuable legislation waited on his desk.

Insider Criticizes Mayor’s Strategy

“The mayor and his team are obsessed with becoming a content farm, often delaying or can-kicking boring governmental meetings so the mayor and his staff can hold pitch sessions for social media videos,” the source told The Post. “The mayor gets pitched comedy sketches more than Lorne Michaels,” the source added. “There are lots of laughs, and there is very little work.”

Progressive Agenda Advances Through Unsigned Bills

Although Mamdani’s frequent strategy of letting bills become law unsigned eventually gets results, it is far from normal. Mayors usually reserve this approach to protest bills they dislike or to avoid taking a stand on legislation they lack the votes to veto. Meanwhile, a number of unsigned measures directly advance his progressive agenda, such as legislation mandating the display of ICE-prohibiting sanctuary rules in city-owned properties and schools.

Public Reaction and Concerns

Former City Council Member Diana Ayala described Mamdani’s behavior as “a little bit weird.” “It is a little bit weird. It gives the impression that enough attention is being paid or they disagree, but they don’t. I haven’t seen anything he’s disagreed, those are his initiatives,” Ayala said. “It would be nice to elevate their initiatives. It shows goodwill and that they are in alignment on specific issues.”
