James Talarico, the Texas Democrat Senate nominee, has faced renewed scrutiny over his past use of the term ‘undocumented Americans’ to describe illegal immigrants, a phrase now seen as a shift in his border security messaging. While Talarico claims to be a ‘border security’ Democrat, his previous rhetoric has raised questions about his stance on immigration enforcement.
Past Comments Spark Debate
In a 2020 media appearance unearthed by The Daily Wire, Talarico used the term ‘undocumented Americans’ to describe illegal immigrants, calling the enforcement of immigration laws during the pandemic an example of America’s commitment to the ‘oppression of undocumented Americans.’ The term has drawn criticism from immigration experts, who argue it blurs the line between American citizens and foreign nationals.
Andrew Arthur, a legal expert with the Center for Immigration Studies, told The Daily Wire that the term ‘blurs the crucial line between citizenship and alienage and insults lawful permanent aliens (‘green card’ holders) who played by the rules and came to this country legally — ideally so they can naturalize and become ‘American citizens’ themselves.’ He also said framing the debate around ‘documentation’ minimizes the issue.
Contrasting Current Messaging
Talarico’s current campaign messaging emphasizes border security, with his recent ad criticizing Joe Biden for failing on the border. In a CNN town hall, he echoed this stance, calling out Democrats like Biden for their lax border policies. However, his recent comments on Biden’s actions have shifted focus, criticizing the administration for not addressing Texas Republicans’ border security efforts rather than his own policies.
The resurfaced comments come after Talarico claimed to stand for the protection of ‘our border communities,’ a stance that contrasts with his past use of the term ‘undocumented Americans,’ which has been used by Democrats to downplay illegal immigration. His past social media posts also included accusations against the Trump administration for conducting raids to deport ‘undocumented Americans,’ a term he defined as ‘folks who work in our businesses, learn in our schools, and contribute to our communities — but lack citizenship documentation.’
