Senate nominee James Talarico (D-TX) has come under fire for allegedly misrepresenting his stance on the SAVE America Act during a town hall event, according to CNN commentator Scott Jennings. During a Wednesday night session, Talarico was asked by a U.S. Navy veteran about the legislation, which requires voters to prove their citizenship when registering to vote. Talarico claimed he did not know enough about the act to comment on it, instead supporting a broader concept he called ‘Fair Voter ID,’ which includes student IDs.

Contradictory Statements Raise Questions

Jennings, however, pointed out that Talarico has previously criticized the SAVE America Act, arguing it would disproportionately affect Black voters. The CNN commentator shared a clip of the town hall, highlighting Talarico’s contradictory statements. In an earlier August interview, Talarico criticized the act, stating it was designed to disenfranchise Black voters, and called it a threat to their ‘God-given rights.’

Accusations of Deception

Jennings accused Talarico of lying to the veteran, claiming he ‘straight up LIED’ during the exchange. The commentator noted that Talarico had looked the veteran in the eye and said he didn’t know enough about the legislation to speak on it, despite his prior public opposition. This contradiction led Jennings to argue that Talarico was avoiding a direct disagreement, as he had done throughout the event.

Public Reaction and Political Implications

Other panelists at the town hall suggested Talarico had been evasive throughout the evening, but Jennings emphasized the severity of the situation, calling Talarico ‘more slippery than a wet panther.’ The incident has sparked further debate over the nominee’s credibility and his stance on voting rights, particularly in light of his past comments on the SAVE America Act.
