A man in California has been charged with murder after initially claiming that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had taken his wife into custody, a claim that led to her discovery in burned remains. Gurinder Gill, 28, of Sacramento, is now facing murder charges after his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30, was found deceased in a rural area of the state.
Disappearance and Investigation
Jasmine Gill was last seen on September 30 at her home in Sacramento. Her cousin reported her missing on October 4. Initially, Gurinder told investigators that ICE had taken her into custody when she went out to check her mail. However, ICE confirmed that no enforcement action had occurred at their home.
As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives found inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements. They uncovered that Jasmine and Gurinder were engaged in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute. On October 1, El Dorado County officials discovered burned and buried human remains, which were later confirmed to belong to Jasmine. Homicide detectives then obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Gurinder was arrested on October 14 and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges. Detectives also executed search warrants at two residences linked to him. He is not eligible for bail.
Jasmine, an Indian-born nurse, was also the mother of Gurinder’s 8-month-old son. A GoFundMe page has raised over $26,000 to support her family in raising the child and transporting her remains to her family in India.
Community Response and Legacy
The fundraiser’s description highlights Jasmine’s fight for a better future for herself and her child. It states, “Jasmine’s life mattered. Her dreams mattered. Her baby’s future matters.” The tragic incident has left her family and community grieving, with many expressing sorrow over the loss of a young mother and the impact on her child.
