The U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned a Panama- and Greece-based law firm, Karnakis and Karnakis, for its role in enabling illicit Iranian shipping activities. This move is part of Operation Economic Outcast, a broader effort to cut off financial support to the Iranian regime.
The Treasury Department stated that the firm’s shipping agents and vessels have facilitated activities that indirectly aid Tehran in generating revenue to fund its military, weapons, and nuclear programs. This action underscores the U.S. commitment to disrupting the Iranian regime’s economic lifelines.
According to the Treasury, the operation involves coordination with international partners to sever the regime’s remaining economic resources. Recently, shipping agents from Singapore and the United Arab Emirates have also been sanctioned for their involvement in Iranian shadow fleet operations.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the U.S. stance on targeting all forms of support for the Iranian regime. He warned that whether through illegal oil transfers or legal means, those aiding the regime will face consequences. Bessent urged supporters of the regime to choose sides, stating that the U.S. knows who they are and what they are doing.
Meanwhile, the Iranian regime continues to threaten actions against U.S. interests. On October 9, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohamed-Baquer Ghalibaf responded to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech with a veiled threat, referencing historical conflicts and invoking the legacy of Alexander the Great.
Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, recently spoke about the ongoing ‘war’ with Israel and the U.S., highlighting the need to strengthen Iran’s power sources against what he describes as a ‘military, economic, and cognitive war.’
Iranian officials’ rhetoric reflects a broader ideological stance, with some believing that the conflict with Israel and the U.S. is a religious duty that continues until the end of time. This mindset drives the regime’s persistent aggression and refusal to negotiate.
