A 21-year-old woman reported being raped at a fraternity party at the University of Chicago, with witnesses claiming men outside the bathroom door cheered as the assault occurred. The incident, which took place on October 10th, has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of campus safety and fraternity conduct.
The alleged sexual assault occurred at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house in Hyde Park, according to reports. The woman, who is not a student at the university, attended the party with her friend Mia Lara and another friend after seeing an Instagram post about the gathering. Lara said she and her friends were dancing in the basement when her friend disappeared with a man she had been kissing.
Lara later found a group of men cheering outside the locked bathroom door, shouting phrases like ‘When’s my turn’ and ‘Let me in.’ She managed to break into the bathroom and found her friend slumped against the wall, with her clothes off and underwear pulled down. The man inside allegedly had his hands around her wrists, and the woman cried out for help, yelling, ‘Get me out of here,’ and ‘Make it stop.’ Lara followed the man outside and accused him of rape, with the man allegedly responding, ‘She wanted to.’
Chicago police confirmed the woman received medical treatment and are investigating the allegations, though no arrests have been made. The University of Chicago banned the ‘person of interest’ from campus, and the fraternity’s national organization denied any involvement, stating they do not believe any members were involved in the incident.
The fraternity posted a statement condemning the assault and expressing support for the investigation, noting that a sober monitor was called over by the victim’s friend. They emphasized their commitment to the victim’s safety and privacy, and pledged to support any investigation into the incident. The fraternity’s headquarters ordered the UChicago chapter to cease all events during the ongoing probe.
While fraternities at the University of Chicago are not officially affiliated with the institution, they are still subject to its policies and disciplinary measures. The incident has reignited discussions about campus safety, fraternity accountability, and the broader issue of sexual violence on college campuses.
