Peter Byrne, the lead singer of the 1980s band Naked Eyes, has passed away at the age of 74. He died on September 14, according to Billboard, following a brief illness. His death was confirmed by the band’s manager, who stated that Byrne passed away peacefully in Los Angeles.

Byrne was best known for his work with Naked Eyes, a band that became synonymous with the nostalgic sounds of the 1980s. Hits like ‘Always Something There to Remind Me’ and ‘Promises, Promises’ remain iconic, with their melodies and lyrics still resonating with audiences decades later.

From the 70s to 80s Stardom

Byrne’s music career began in the mid-1970s, and he joined forces with Jeff Starrs in 1976 before joining the band Studio in 1977. In 1982, he formed Naked Eyes with Rob Fisher, and the band quickly achieved chart success with their self-titled debut album, which made it to the Billboard 200.

‘Always Something There to Remind Me’ became the band’s biggest hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. ‘Promises, Promises,’ co-written by Byrne and Fisher, reached No. 11 in 1983. Other popular tracks followed, including ‘(What) In the Name of Love’ and ‘When the Lights Go Out.’

A Legacy of Music and Family

Despite their radio success, Fisher and Byrne only collaborated for a couple of years and never toured together. Fisher passed away in 1999. Byrne is survived by his siblings, his three children, and his ex-wife. A private family service will be held in his honor.
