Tatiana Maslany, the star of the Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, has criticized celebrities who avoid discussing politics, claiming that all entertainment is inherently political. During an interview with far-left commentator Mehdi Hasan on the We’re Not Kidding podcast, Maslany expressed frustration over stars like Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan who have remained politically neutral.
Art as a Mirror to Society
“Artists are like mirrors to the world, to society,” Maslany said. “We have to name things… it’s, like, such an important, intrinsic part of our job.” Hasan mentioned Selleck, who refused to comment on Donald Trump, and noted Selleck’s response about not wanting to anger half the country. Maslany argued that all entertainment carries a political stance, whether through humor, representation, or perspective.
Condemning Political Indifference
“There’s no disconnect, in my mind,” Maslany said. “And, to me, those are two very rich men who stand to lose a lot if they stand up for something.” She added that art should challenge and disturb people, whether through laughter or shock. Maslany called the approach of Selleck and Jordan “bizarre” and “cowardly,” emphasizing the need for celebrities to engage with political issues.
Concerns Over Media Consolidation
Maslany also criticized the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, fearing it would limit the range of voices in entertainment. She predicted that the merger would lead to content being filtered through a conservative ideology or gatekept, preventing shows from discussing the current administration even indirectly.
She-Hulk’s Mixed Reception
Maslany’s pro-feminist Marvel project She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was a critical and commercial flop when it debuted in 2022, airing for nine episodes. Despite its controversy, Maslany remains committed to using her platform to challenge societal norms and push for political engagement in entertainment.
