White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia addressed recent media claims that she lied about being a lawyer, clarifying her legal background and emphasizing the distinction between the terms ‘lawyer’ and ‘attorney.’ The controversy emerged after left-leaning outlets, including CNN, questioned her qualifications following her first press briefing.
Media Misinterpretation Over Legal Titles
Zacharia clarified that she has never presented herself as a practicing attorney, though she holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. The media, particularly left-wing outlets, have sensationalized the difference between a lawyer and an attorney, often conflating the two terms. According to Zacharia, the term ‘lawyer’ is broadly used for someone who has studied law and earned a degree, while an attorney is a licensed legal practitioner.
Clarifying Her Legal Background
Zacharia revealed that she sat for the bar exam in 2011 but did not pass. Despite this, she has provided legal analysis rather than legal advice. She consulted with Pepperdine’s president on how to identify herself professionally and was advised that using the term ‘lawyer’ was acceptable, while ‘attorney’ or ‘esquire’ were not.
Reiterating Her Role and Responsibilities
When asked if she would provide legal consultation to President Trump, Zacharia emphasized that her role as press secretary is to communicate the administration’s message and build relationships with the press. She clarified that she is not being hired as White House counsel and that her responsibilities are strictly communicative in nature.
‘My job is to amplify and communicate his message,’ she said. ‘I only intend to do that.’
Zacharia expressed frustration over the media’s portrayal of the situation as a conspiracy, stating that she was careful in how she presented her credentials. She reiterated that she has never come across as someone who is an attorney at law, and that the misunderstanding stems from the media’s overreach rather than any intent to deceive.
