A wildfire driven by Santa Ana winds has forced evacuations and destroyed at least six homes in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, California. The Norte Fire, which broke out around 11:33 a.m. near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte, spread rapidly, reaching 465 acres by 2:40 p.m. on Friday. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, pushed into residential areas, with flames spreading near Avenida Calita, Via La Mirada, and Via De Agua in San Juan Capistrano.

Firefighters Battle Blazing Flames

More than 500 firefighters worked tirelessly to protect structures from the ground and air, using water-dropping aircraft to help slow the flames. Orange County Fire Authority officials confirmed that at least six homes had been damaged or destroyed, though the preliminary count did not specify how many were completely lost. The fire remained at 0% containment as of Friday afternoon, according to ABC News.

Evacuation Orders and Public Safety Warnings

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for several zones in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, with CAL FIRE warning of an “immediate threat to life” and advising the public to avoid the affected areas. Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley urged residents to evacuate immediately, warning that people gathering on sidewalks were putting themselves in danger.

One firefighter suffered mild heat exhaustion and was taken to a hospital, though officials said the individual was doing well. Additional strike teams were deployed to assist with the firefighting efforts. The Orange County Fire Authority’s Capt. Steve Concialdi emphasized that crews were doing everything possible to protect structures, despite the rapidly spreading fire.

Community Impact and Response

Residents fled their homes as the fire advanced, with many scrambling to leave the area before the situation worsened. Aerial footage captured the extent of the destruction, showing flames coming through rooftops and engulfing homes. The incident highlights the dangers posed by wildfires, especially in areas prone to dry conditions and strong winds.

As the fire continues to burn, officials are urging the public to prioritize safety over curiosity, emphasizing that staying in the area to watch the firefighting efforts is not advisable. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power of natural disasters and the critical role of emergency response teams in protecting communities.
