Why Evangelicals Vote Republican: It’s Not Rocket Science
Evangelicals align with Republicans on key social values, shaping election outcomes.

As the November 3 midterms approach, the voting behavior of evangelical Christians remains a focal point in election analysis. According to Pew Research, white evangelicals have consistently shown strong support for the Republican Party, making them a key constituency in the party’s coalition.
Why Do Evangelicals Vote Republican?
It’s not because the Bible instructs them to, nor is it due to any inherent alignment with a ‘God’s Party’ ideology. Nor is it a sign of political cravenness or identity politics. Instead, the core reason lies in the alignment of Republican values with those held by many evangelicals.
Evangelicals who take the Bible seriously find greater resonance in the current Republican platform. This includes a commitment to the dignity of the human person, the sanctity of marriage, and the belief in a fixed human nature. These values are central to evangelical faith and are often at odds with the Democratic Party’s positions on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.
Moral Positions and Party Alignment
Evangelicals believe in the dignity of every person, which for them means the right to life at all stages. The Democratic Party’s support for abortion, which evangelicals view as abhorrent, makes them reluctant to support the party. Similarly, the Democratic stance on marriage as a social construct, rather than a biblical institution, is seen as a rejection of both religious and biological truths.
Religious liberty is another key concern. Over the past decade, the Democratic Party has increasingly marginalized conservative religious views, treating them as outside the boundaries of polite society. This has further alienated many evangelicals, who feel their values are not only being ignored but actively opposed.
Shared Goals, Differing Means
While there may be disagreement on specific policies like minimum wage, immigration, and healthcare, the shared goal of human flourishing remains. However, the means to achieve this goal differ, and evangelicals believe their approach is more aligned with the Republican Party’s values.
Despite the imperfections of the Republican Party on some issues, evangelicals see a stark asymmetry in how the two parties treat their concerns. They are not looking for a perfect party but one that shares their core values and respects their moral convictions.
