New York is emerging as a formidable competitor to California in the television and film production industry, according to recent industry reports. While California has long held the title of the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World,’ New York is rapidly closing the gap, with its production spending reaching $1.61 billion in the third quarter of 2024 — just $147 million behind California’s $1.76 billion.

Infrastructure and Investment Drive Growth

Industry tracker ProdPro’s quarterly report highlights New York’s significant surge in production spend, which rose by 87% compared to California’s 17% increase. This growth is attributed to substantial investments in soundstage infrastructure, crewmember unions, and access to lucrative East Coast locations such as the Tri-State area.

Recent projects, such as the upcoming Miami Vice: 85, have primarily been filmed in New York and Wayne, New Jersey, showcasing the state’s growing appeal for major productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, New York’s ability to sustain long-running scripted TV shows in the same soundstages has also contributed to its rise in the industry.

Industry Shifts and Spending Trends

A recent report by a coalition of Hollywood unions, including IATSE, the DGA, and SAG-AFTRA, revealed a significant decline in Hollywood studios’ domestic production spending. Over the past 25 years, Hollywood’s U.S. production spending dropped from 74% to 42% for films and from 94% to 64% for television. Meanwhile, total production budgets have grown from $3 billion to $7 billion for films and from $933 million to $8.4 billion for TV.

Despite these shifts, California remains the largest production hub, but the rapid rebound in New York’s production spending has placed it in a strong position to potentially overtake California in the near future. As Alex LoVerde, co-founder and CEO at ProdPro, noted, New York’s recovery has accelerated this year, making it a key contender for the title of the U.S. entertainment capital.
