During a pregame ceremony at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a decorated Air Force instructor, tragically lost his life after a fall during a scheduled fast-rope demonstration. The incident occurred Saturday night as part of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners’ annual ‘Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans’ event. Patterson, assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio, was participating in a four-person rappelling demonstration prior to the kickoff of the college football matchup against the Navy Midshipmen.

A Tragic Fall and Immediate Response

Witnesses reported that Patterson fell approximately 170 feet after losing control during his descent from the stadium’s rafters. Stadium medical personnel and emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, providing medical assistance for about ten minutes while spectators formed a protective barrier around the area to respect the privacy of the incident.

A Career of Service and Recognition

Patterson, originally from Fort Stewart, Georgia, had served in the Air Force for 15 years. His career included receiving the Air and Space Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters and being named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022. His death has left his unit and family in deep grief, with Air Force leadership emphasizing the significant impact of his service.

Impact on the Game and Community

The incident cast a somber mood over the stadium and delayed the start of the game by about ten minutes. Despite the tragedy, the game proceeded as per athletic conference bylaws, with UTSA ultimately winning 38-34. UTSA Head Coach Jeff Traylor described the event as heartbreaking, noting how the tragedy visibly affected the more than 23,000 spectators in attendance.

Ongoing Investigation

Officials have stated that the exact circumstances leading to the fall remain under active military investigation. The tragedy has raised questions about the safety protocols of such demonstrations and the risks involved in high-profile military events.
