Federal investigators are using DNA evidence in their criminal probe into Rep. Ilhan Omar‘s immigration history, according to multiple reports. The evidence is part of a broader investigation into allegations of fraud related to her family’s immigration paperwork, including claims that she may have married her brother to help him obtain a green card.
The Trump administration has sought to strip Omar of her U.S. citizenship, and federal prosecutors are reportedly planning to use the DNA evidence to support their case. The investigation includes a raid on Omar’s DC residence last week, where agents seized boxes of evidence. It is unclear how the DNA was obtained, but sources suggest it was critical in verifying the allegations.
People familiar with the probe say investigators have also used whistleblowers and government records to build their case. The DNA evidence is said to be particularly important in proving the alleged marriage to her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, which occurred in 2009. The green card application for Elmi never came to fruition, according to the sources.
It remains unclear whether the DNA was collected before or after the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raid on Omar’s home last Monday, when agents were seen exiting with boxes marked ‘Seized Property Evidence.’ Federal investigators are also in possession of Omar’s personal passport, though her official passport from her office has not been retrieved.
BREAKING: The feds are in possession of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) DNA and personal passport as part of the federal investigation into her US citizenship, colleague @davidspunt reports. It’s unclear how her DNA was obtained, but sources tell David it was NOT from a trash can or dumpster. @FoxNews is told that reports of agents dumpster diving are incorrect. Additionally, David is told the feds have her personal passport as evidence. Her official passport (via her office) has not been retrieved, and authorities aren’t concerned that she fled the country. They believe she in the U.S., and feel that if she were to flee the country, it would create problems for her down the line as her husband and family members are in the US.
Authorities are not concerned about Omar fleeing the country, according to reports. The investigation has the potential to expand into a conspiracy case, as several members of Omar’s family have been subpoenaed. Federal investigators are also probing her financial records, adding another layer to the probe.
