Federal investigators reportedly collected garbage from Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) home in Washington, DC, in search of her DNA as part of an immigration-related fraud case. The investigation, which prompted a raid on her residence last week, centers on whether Omar or her father lied about her age during her naturalization application.
Raid and Subpoenas
Last week, agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit raided Omar’s D.C. residence after a federal judge approved a search warrant. During the raid, investigators seized Omar’s cellphone and have subpoenaed her family members as part of the case.
A report from NewsNation indicates that before the raid, investigators collected garbage from Omar’s home in an effort to obtain her DNA. Multiple sources familiar with the probe told NewsNation that DNA evidence is critical to the investigation, suggesting the case is broader than initially perceived.
Broader Investigation
The investigation encompasses family members of the congresswoman, with evidence expected to be presented before a grand jury. Relatives of the lawmaker have been named in some of the subpoenas issued by federal prosecutors, according to NewsNation.
Months of Investigation
Another report from NewsNation details how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had been looking into Omar for months before the raid last week. In January, for example, ICE agents reportedly met with Scott Johnson of Powerline Blog, one of the first online news sources to publish allegations of immigration fraud by Omar.
Johnson told NewsNation that during the meeting, ICE agents asked questions related to Omar’s immigration and naturalization status, as well as questions about her father, which would bear on the same issue. He inferred that the agents were looking at a possible civil proceeding that might lead to her denaturalization.
Financial Investigation
Along with the immigration probe into Omar, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro revealed this week that her office has opened a financial investigation into the congresswoman. This may be picking up an investigation that the Biden administration had started into her reported multimillion-dollar net worth.
