Ukrainian forces have executed the world’s first-ever battlefield rescue using an aerial drone, according to newly released footage shared by Ukraine’s 92nd Separate Assault Brigade. The video shows a wounded soldier securing himself to a large drone before being lifted into the air and transported over blurred-out terrain. The drone lowers him to the ground, where an operator greets him with, “Welcome back to the ground!”

The footage, shared Monday by the brigade, highlights the innovative use of drone technology in a high-risk military operation. The unidentified infantryman had been wounded at his position before the rescue, according to the brigade. The mission was necessary due to the intense enemy drone activity and the presence of landmines, which made evacuation using conventional unmanned ground vehicles impossible.

“At that point, the specialists in our unit took it upon themselves to attempt something that had never been done before: evacuating a serviceman using an aerial drone,” the brigade said in a statement. This unprecedented operation underscores Ukraine’s efforts to leverage advanced technology in its defense against Russian forces.

The release of the footage coincided with discussions about potential peace talks involving Russia, the United States, and China. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a summit with President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during an October 9 phone call with Trump. The Kremlin plans to hold the talks on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, on November 18 and 19.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Monday that a meeting had been discussed but noted that nothing was certain yet. A senior U.S. official reported that Trump had not agreed to attend but could be open to the idea. Almost immediately, Kyiv objected to the idea of peace talks without Ukraine at the table. Ukraine’s top diplomat, Andrii Sybiha, warned that such talks would only embolden Putin.

The drone rescue operation represents a significant milestone in modern warfare, demonstrating the potential of unmanned aerial systems in complex and dangerous environments. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the use of such technology may become more common, reshaping the landscape of battlefield medicine and military logistics.
