Iranian cyber operations have increasingly targeted U.S. infrastructure and military systems, posing a significant threat to national security. The United States faces a growing challenge as Iran’s cyber capabilities expand, with attacks impacting critical sectors such as water supply, healthcare, and energy. These operations are not limited to the Middle East, as recent incidents have shown that Iran’s reach extends to the continental United States.

Targeting Critical Infrastructure

Iran has launched cyberattacks that have disrupted essential services, including water supply and healthcare. A notable incident in March involved a cyberattack that reportedly wiped between 80,000-200,000 devices, leading to delays in hospital surgeries and panic among patients. In July, several American towns issued water advisories after a coordinated cyberattack targeted water facilities, with cybersecurity experts noting similarities to past Iranian hacking operations.

Cyber Threats to Military and Government Systems

Cybercriminals affiliated with Iran, such as the Handala Hack Team, have launched direct attacks on U.S. military operations and government systems. These attacks have compromised sensitive information, including details on the F-35 fighter jet and the email of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations Director. Iran’s cyber operations have also extended to Israel and America’s Arab partners, pressuring them to curtail relations with the United States.

Urgent Need for Collaboration and Cybersecurity Measures

U.S. officials must take a firm stance against Iran’s cyber warfare, signaling that any future deal with Iran will depend on the cessation of cyberattacks on U.S. and partner infrastructure. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) should lead a nationwide cybersecurity educational initiative, working with state, local, and tribal governments, as well as major infrastructure stakeholders. This initiative should focus on identifying zero-day vulnerabilities and providing necessary tools and resources to address them.

Preparing for the Future

As Iran continues its cyber operations, it is essential that the United States treats cyberattacks targeting military assets, civilians, and international partners with the same gravity as kinetic strikes. By exposing Iran’s common hacking signatures, the government can prepare its people to recognize and thwart these operations. The intelligence community and U.S. foreign partners should also exchange tactics, techniques, and procedures to enhance collective cybersecurity defenses.
