A 16-year-old student at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, shot and killed three children and a teacher before being fatally shot by an armed parent during the attack on October 15, according to authorities. The incident has sparked renewed attention to the shooter’s family history, which includes domestic violence and substance abuse.
Family History of Violence and Alcohol Abuse
The shooter’s father had a documented history of alcohol abuse and domestic violence. He was arrested and sentenced to 48 months in prison after assaulting the shooter’s mother and threatening her with a knife. However, he was released early and petitioned a judge to lift the restraining order to see his son, according to a report by The New York Post.
Following his arrest, the father acknowledged his alcohol abuse and previous jail time in letters to a judge. After his early release, he was arrested again for allegedly head-butting a police officer and violating his parole by using alcohol and marijuana. It remains unclear whether he was convicted in that case.
Shooting Details and Immediate Response
The teenager, who was a former student at the school, shot his way into the building and opened fire in a special education classroom. He had previously received special education services at the school. The attack resulted in the deaths of three students aged 5, 8, and 11, as well as 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old student in a wheelchair was also shot and hospitalized, and a 54-year-old teacher was injured.
The shooting ended when an armed parent, Kaylub Giamanco, followed the gunman into the school and shot and killed him. A teacher had also tackled the shooter and was grappling with him for control of the weapon.
Parent’s Account of the Attack
Kaylub Giamanco called his mother shortly after the incident, sharing his experience. His mother, Kenda Freeman, recounted the moment as follows: “He said, ‘Mom, I just shot and killed somebody.’ I said, ‘Kaylub, tell me about it.’ He said, ‘A man went into my daughter’s school and shot kids,’ and he said, ‘and I looked at him point-blank, and I shot and killed him, Mom.’”
