Gas prices in the United States have seen a modest decline, despite a significant upward trend in crude oil costs over the past few weeks. As of Tuesday, the national average for gas sat at $4.27 per gallon, a seven-cent decrease from the previous week and a 20-cent drop from a month ago, according to AAA. However, the cost per barrel of crude oil has surged since October 7, rising from $88 to $98, according to Trading Economics.

Although oil prices have continued their upward movement, they have slightly dipped from the recent high of $99 on October 16. The regional differences in gas prices remain stark, with North Carolina averaging $3.59 per gallon compared to California’s $6.14, reflecting varying state-level policies and market dynamics.

AAA noted that the national average has remained above $4 per gallon since late July, marking a $1 increase compared to this time last year. Current conflicts and instability in the Middle East, along with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War, have contributed to the spike in oil prices. President Donald Trump has criticized the targeting of diesel refineries, calling for a more stable energy supply.

While gas prices remain below the record-high of $5.01 per gallon set in 2022, diesel prices have reached an all-time high of $6.52 per gallon, though they have since decreased by about 20 cents. In California, the state average for diesel is significantly higher, standing at $8.50 per gallon.

To address the rising diesel costs, Trump announced the launch of the $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief Program (HFR) during a rally in Kansas, aimed at helping farmers affected by the price hikes. Trump also claimed that once the conflict with Iran concludes, oil prices will experience a dramatic drop.
