Iran Blocks Deal Amid Midterm Tensions
Iran delays talks with the U.S. amid rising tensions and economic strain, as midterms approach.

Iran is delaying negotiations to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports from Reuters. The Iranian government is allegedly doing so to prevent former President Donald Trump from gaining political benefits from a potential resolution, which could include lower oil prices. The U.S. blockade of Iranian ports is causing severe economic distress, with annual inflation reaching 73.6% in September and the rial currency falling nearly 35% against the dollar since the naval blockade was reimposed in July.
Iranian Stance and U.S. Pressure
Iranian officials claim they are preparing for potential attacks from Israel and the U.S., rather than seeking a diplomatic resolution. The country’s economy is under significant strain, with no oil leaving the nation, leading to a lack of hard currency and national income. The Iranian proposal, known as the ‘seven-day plan,’ would see the Strait of Hormuz fully opened within seven days if the U.S. lifts its blockade, eases restrictions on Iranian oil exports, releases frozen assets, and ends hostilities.
Political and Strategic Implications
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, a visit just eight days before the Israeli election and 15 days before the U.S. midterms. Analysts suggest that the Iranian clerical establishment is determined to hurt Trump politically, mirroring efforts against former President Jimmy Carter in 1980. The U.S. and Israel’s recent military actions have undermined previous diplomatic efforts, deepening distrust and making a sustainable deal unlikely.
Future Outlook and Analyst Views
Iranian analyst Saeed Leylaz believes the U.S. should prepare for a near-state of war with Iran even after Trump’s presidency. He argues that trust between the two nations has been irreparably damaged. Meanwhile, Alex Vatanka, director of the Iran program at the Middle East Institute, suggests that Trump may continue to pressure Iran through military actions, as the Iranians are not making genuine efforts to negotiate.
