Billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has committed $80 million to support Democratic candidates in the 2026 midterm elections, according to reports from The New York Times and CNBC. The donation is part of a broader strategy to help Democrats regain majority control of the House of Representatives, which is seen as critical to curbing President Donald Trump’s agenda for the remainder of his second term.
Strategic Funding for Democratic Success
Bloomberg’s financial contribution is aimed at securing key congressional seats and strengthening the Democratic Party’s position in the House. The move comes as Democrats face internal criticism over the growing influence of billionaires in politics, yet Bloomberg’s support is expected to bolster their campaign efforts. His political adviser, Howard Wolfson, emphasized the importance of resources in modern campaigns, stating that Bloomberg is confident in the outcome.
According to FEC filings, Bloomberg is now among the top five individual donors to the Democratic Party. His contributions include $11 million to a super PAC supporting Micah Lasher in New York’s 12th Congressional District and $2.5 million toward Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s reelection bid. This brings his total donations to Democrats and affiliated causes this election cycle to over $23 million.
Trump Responds with a Massive Campaign Push
In response to Bloomberg’s donation, fellow billionaire President Donald Trump announced plans to spend $400 million on Republican campaign efforts. Trump claimed that over $300 million has already been allocated to advertising, voter outreach, rallies, and other campaign activities. He framed the spending as a patriotic duty to protect the Republican Party’s influence in Congress.
With both major candidates leveraging their wealth to shape the political landscape, the 2026 midterms are expected to be one of the most financially significant elections in recent history. The race for control of the House will likely have far-reaching implications for national policy and governance.
