The family of Chief Two Guns White Calf, whose image inspired the iconic Washington Redskins logo, is seeking a meeting with President Donald Trump to restore the team’s former name and logo. The move comes after former owner Daniel Snyder abruptly discontinued the name and logo in 2020, without consulting the descendants of the chief.

Chief’s Legacy and Logo’s Impact

Chief Two Guns White Calf, a revered leader of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, inspired the 1971 Redskins logo designed by Walter “Blackie” Wetzel. The logo was used by the franchise for nearly 50 years before it was retired. The family argues that the name and logo held a significant place in NFL history and that the decision to remove them was abrupt and without consultation.

“He was such a leader, and he had a hold on the National Football League for 50 years,” said Morningstar Gopher, an estate representative. Despite the controversy surrounding the name, Native Americans largely supported it or were indifferent. “They tried to erase us, like we didn’t exist anymore,” said Kenneth Conway, a family member.

Family’s Demands and Trump’s Role

The family’s demands include restoring the former name, logo, and potentially renaming the team’s stadium after their grandfather. “It would be a big win in his pocket in terms of helping the Native people in securing the first-ever NFL stadium named after a Native American,” said Gopher.

President Trump has expressed support for the return of the Redskins name and even threatened to delay the team’s stadium construction if the name wasn’t restored. However, he has not spoken on the issue recently. The family hopes to rekindle his interest through a meeting.

“We’re hopeful for a meeting with President Trump in order to help get this pushed forward,” Gopher said. The family’s efforts have drawn attention as they seek to honor their ancestor’s legacy and assert their place in the history of the NFL.
