CNN European Affairs Commentator Dominic James criticized the responses of French and Italian authorities to recent demonstrations, arguing that law and order measures are being used to deflect from the core issues at play. On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Story Is,” James stated that the authorities are failing to engage meaningfully with the concerns that fueled the protests.

Deflecting From Core Issues

James asserted that the issues that sparked the demonstrations are being overshadowed by the authorities’ focus on maintaining public order. He explained that the public unrest in France and Italy is being treated as a law enforcement matter rather than a broader social and political issue.

“Well, the issues that were talked about and the issues that fueled it and provided the oxygen, the catalyst for these demonstrations are now, one could argue, being obfuscated by the law and order response by the authorities,” James said. “They’re using this as an excuse to deflect from meaningful engagement with the issues that the overwhelming majority of people in the streets are trying to shine a light on in French society, and for whom the rioting and the looters have, of course, been distractions, as has the police violence,” he added.

Strategic Avoidance of Engagement

James emphasized that the authorities are adopting a strategic approach to avoid addressing the underlying problems that have led to the protests. He argued that this tactic allows the government to shift focus away from the real issues, such as economic inequality, political dissatisfaction, and social grievances.

“But focusing on that for the authorities is a strategic way to, essentially, deflect from this and to move away from a meaningful engagement,” James concluded. His comments highlight a growing debate about how governments should respond to public unrest and whether law enforcement actions are being used to avoid deeper political and social conversations.

Broader Implications

The discussion reflects a broader trend in European politics, where public demonstrations are increasingly seen as a reflection of deeper societal concerns. As protests continue to gain momentum, the challenge for authorities is to balance public safety with the need for genuine engagement with the issues that are driving the unrest.
