Cartel gunmen opened fire on a public transportation bus carrying students in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, causing panic and fear among the local community. The attack occurred on Thursday morning in the town of Escuinapa, where a green school bus was transporting students from a local junior high school on their way to classes.
According to the Sinaloa government, the attack specifically targeted the bus driver, who sustained shrapnel injuries. Despite the gunfire, the driver managed to drive the bus toward a nearby military checkpoint, where he sought assistance. Mexican military forces were on the scene to provide aid and security.
Passengers captured the chaos on video, which was shared on social media, offering a harrowing look at the moment of the attack. Mexican authorities launched a search operation to locate the perpetrators but were unsuccessful in identifying the gunmen.
This incident takes place amid an ongoing turf war between two rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel: the Chapitos and the Los Mayos. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced disappearances, and despite significant military presence, the government has struggled to curb the violence.
The situation is further complicated by a U.S. Department of Justice criminal indictment against Sinaloa’s governor, Ruben Rocha Moya, who is accused of working for the Los Chapitos. President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly defended Rocha Moya, claiming there is no evidence of wrongdoing.
